If you grew up in the 1960s, Valentine’s Day didn’t start with dinner reservations—it started at school.
Days before February 14th, classrooms filled with excitement as shoeboxes were transformed into Valentine “mailboxes.” They were wrapped in construction paper, stickers, and crayons, each one proudly placed on a desk. Everyone brought a stack of small cards—cowboys, cartoon characters, and simple hearts—with one important rule: everyone got one.
The cards were signed carefully, sometimes with shaky handwriting, sometimes with just a name—but always with intention. It wasn’t about romance. It was about inclusion, kindness, and showing up for one another.
That kind of Valentine’s Day feels right at home in Pine Ridge. Simple. Thoughtful. Community-centered. A reminder that love doesn’t need to be grand—it just needs to be shared.
